Neil Cossons and Martin Jenkins were contemporaries at Liverpool University in the late 1950s and share an interest in Liverpool, its transport, and industrial history. Neil Cossons pursued a career in museums and was the first director of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum from 1971. He was then director of the National Maritime Museum, and for fourteen years was the director of the Science Museum, London. He chaired English Heritage from 2000 to 2007. Martin Jenkins was born and educated on Merseyside. He was in 1958, together with Neil Cossons, one of the founders of the Liverpool University Public Transport Society, and in 1959/60 was involved in preserving a Liverpool tram now located at the National Tramway Museum in Crich, Derbyshire. Following a spell with the Royal Shakespeare Company, he was founding artistic director of the Everyman Theatre, Liverpool, and later a BBC chief producer (drama). He has co-authored several books on Liverpool and still works as a drama director.
